Propane & Natural Gas FAQ
What is the difference between a propane regulator and a natural gas regulator?+
Propane is stored under high pressure in tanks and must be reduced to a low pressure before use, so propane regulators handle high inlet pressures (up to 250 PSI). Natural gas arrives at the appliance at low pressure from the utility, so natural gas regulators are not needed in most residential installations. Always use the correct regulator type — mixing them is dangerous and can damage appliances.
Can I convert my BBQ from propane to natural gas?+
Yes, most propane BBQs can be converted to natural gas with a conversion kit that replaces the regulator, hoses and burner orifices. The kit must match your BBQ brand and model. DPPropaneSupply sells conversion kits for common grill brands. After conversion, the BBQ can no longer be used with propane unless converted back.
How do I know what size propane regulator I need?+
Regulator size is based on the total BTU load of the appliances it feeds. A single BBQ typically uses a low-pressure regulator rated at 11 inches of water column (about 1/2 PSI). For larger systems — RV, generator, multiple appliances — use a two-stage regulator sized to the combined BTU rating of all connected appliances.
Are the gas detectors you sell certified?+
Yes, all gas detectors and alarms sold by DPPropaneSupply are CSA or ULC certified for propane or natural gas detection. Propane is heavier than air and pools at floor level, while natural gas rises — install detectors at the correct height and follow the manufacturer instructions.
What is the shipping time for propane parts?+
Orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Standard shipping across Canada typically takes 2-5 business days. Orders over $100 ship free. We do not ship compressed gas cylinders or pressurized tanks — only parts and accessories.
Do propane parts need to be installed by a professional?+
Some parts — like tank valves, service valves and line components — must be installed by a licensed gas fitter or technician depending on your province regulations. Simple parts like BBQ hoses and regulators can be installed by the owner following the manufacturer instructions. When in doubt, consult a certified professional.
